Debug SMTP

Hi,
is there any way how to debug what data exactly goes to /usr/share/php/Horde/Smtp.php
(if it goes there) when I push “Send” button in EGW 14.2 ?

Without more precise log I am not able to solve my problem with SMTP error
described in “Message send failed: Error connecting to SMTP server” thread.

And I still did not get right advice that leads me to fix the error.

Ralf Becker advised to set emailadmin_account::SMTP_DEBUG_LOG to a file-name to log
communication with SMTP server. But that did not work for me. File is created but there
is nothing being logged in it.
And I know that another user of EGW (nick taranter) have the same trouble with empty log file.

Just confirming, I have been unable to resolve the issue. Just waiting till more people experience the issue with the hopes it gets resolved. Seems to be hit or miss whether others are having an issue or not. I have tried almost everything I know to get it working.

I have my development EGW server (current TRUNK) using my functioning production EGW (TRUNK from November) servers SMTP. So I’m pretty confident it is not the SMTP server.

My environment is Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, Postfix w/ Dovecot.

The reason why nothing is showing in the SMTP_DEBUG_LOG output is because NULL commands are being issued to the SMTP server on the final attempt.

This evening my plan is to run a network sniffer so I can see exactly what SMTP comamnds are being issued over a local unsecured SMTP connection.

I will keep you posted with my findings.

Hmm, if there’s nothing being logged:

either permissions do not allow it or
code never got so far to communicate with SMTP server

I used that log when I developed the new SMTP code it it was working.

Did you check your Apache error_log?

Hi,

I put 777 on that log file. So I think it is not permission.

In apache error.log I have always these errors when I try to send message. Same for every one message.

Do you have this issue also with a fully clean install?
Eg. blank database, no update?

I used wire shark and captured the following:

This is my working version of EGW (TRUNK Checkout from 11/21/2014); the transaction initiates as one would expect.
***Note the relay access denied is expected

This the the Current version of EGW (TRUNK checkout from 1/13/2105); this one has a weird preamble and then fails.

To answer one question in the thread, this is with a clean Checkout of TRUNK and a clean database.

Yes, I installed EGW 14.2 on clean fully updated debian wheezy.
First I installed apache2 and php5 and then I performed installation of EGW 14.2 according to
instructions:

for debian.
i.e.
echo ‘deb http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/server:/eGroupWare:/trunk/Debian_7.0/ /’ >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/egroupware-epl.list
apt-get update
apt-get install egroupware-epl

However I had to install egroupware-epl-egw-pear (14.1) from
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/server:/eGroupWare/Debian_7.0/
first because of package dependencies and impossibility to continue without this package.

I even tried to set SMTP in EGW to other SMTP server (we used in present for mailing).
And always the same SMTP error I mentioned in the thread.

I wonder if someone have working installation of EGW 14.2 on debian installed from this repo.

aware of a problem like you describe it.

I will ask our testers to check if sending mail against a SMTP server
requiring authentication works.

Can you send me via private mail credentials for a test-account on your
IMAP and SMTP server, so Klaus or I can test sending mails from our
development machines or one of our Debian test-systems.

I think I found and fixed the problem:

Just make that little change or download and replace the whole file with:
