(OT because a/ I am on 1.8 still too - for different reasons - and b/ I never used the Mail feature on EGW)
Hi
This list has been quiet for the last while - I cannot help as I have
not yet made the jump from 1.8 though we have to look at that some
time soon.
The quiet period started sort of when it was announced that 1.8 is going to be EOL.
The only thin I can offer is to ask if you have confirmed the email
server settings - I had a problem with my initial setup where I had
not set the port number (SSL connection to SMTP)
cheers Ken
EGW is a very useful collaboration tool, but the folks behind
it haven’t really pushed for greater awareness in the IT world, so
there is not a as large a community for peer support as there is for
a kit like Zarafa, SOGo, or Citadel. Years ago, there was a couple of
Linux server distros that had EGW installed be default, but the lack
of marketing by Stylelite meant that the distro communities were
being asked for support, rather than directing their inquiries to
this list.
Well this is a two-edged sword, I wish to believe that the kind of 'quiet’
we are seeing is rather the outcome of EGW being a 'fire and forget’
solution - real/reproducible issues do get solved/answered and then
everybody just gets on with their business… and in this field
solutions rarely get the ‘word of mouth’ advertisement, like admin to admin…
( do you have the time to put the ‘advertisement’ of EGW into your signature(s),
or even ‘like’ it on FB or G+ ? )
[side note, does EGW/Stylite have an official G+ profile ? I’d follow that… ]
[I did have an opportunity to ask some of my questions re.v14 and was quickly answered to]
The other side of the coin may be, that since it works for most people in most cases,
no one outside of Stylite bothers to look/analyze the code, so you don’t get
the ‘independent’ advice because no one knows - or everybody is just
too busy working. Just have a look at the usage statistics that get submitted.
IOW, I suppose, if you can create patches, then patches would probably be welcome …
You can’t have a ‘community’ without ‘community contributions’, I guess…
If I had to start over, I am not so sure I would go with EGW - there
are some default behaviors and engineering choices that were not
fully tested in a homogeneous network that have been causing a lot of
grief for me,
and it appears that the jump to ver 14.2 is almost as
much work as jumping ship entirely for something that will play
better with OSX and Windows.
Your diagnosis seems to be a bit overstated to me, in /my/ view.
(although remembering the time I spent trying to setup pERP, I sort-of sympathize.)
( the problem I faced with pERP in the end was not its technical workings, cause those got sorted/helped,
but rather, I think, something I missed in admin/user-side configurations;
I should have started from a ‘demo’ database and try to extend/extrapolate/understand it…
and then I wanted to continue but my time allocated to get it running,
had to be given to other more pressing things )
Sorry for the long digression, especially since it doesn’t provide a
solution for you…
