Admins: please stop that stupid vote

Dear admins!

I asolutely can’t see how the project should benefit from that vote.

Cornelius and I already stated that we are not fixed to the name and we also
already changed the name to Tine 2.0 before you posted your idea about the
vote. Which means there is no need to vote about which version of eGroupWare
should get called eGroupWare.

This means we can only vote about following:

YES, if you are in favor of: The existing codeline continuing to evolve the
existing codebase with it’s
broad range of applications. The new codeline has to form a new project
under a new name as well as discontinuing the use of our mailing lists
for purposes of advertising their new code, petitioning developers, etc.

NO, if you are in favor of: The existing codeline would be
forked into a new project (though fork is the wrong word as they would
be the only ones using and supporting the existing code).

Cornelius and I stated multiple times the we don’t want to fork the project
and also no other developer stated the he wants this. The only persons who
want a fork are the admins.
This means we can only vote about following:

YES, if you are in favor of: The existing codeline continuing to evolve the
existing codebase with it’s
broad range of applications. The new codeline has to discontinuing the use
of our mailing lists
for purposes of advertising their new code, petitioning developers, etc.

NO, if you are in favor of: nothing.

Also no one stated that he want’s to limit the number application delivered
with eGroupWare.
This means we can only vote about following:

I can’t really imagine that any developer in the project likes to vote, if
he will be allowed to talk about new ideas in the project or not. That’s a
extremly stupid vote.

Just to make it clear again:

Cornelius and I have no interesst in taking over the project.

We have also no interesst in forking the project.

The NO option of the vote is absolutely no option for us. Option YES is also
no option for us, as it would forbid us to speak about our ideas. I tought I
did leave the GDR 18 years ago. Do you remember that eGroupWare is
democratic project by it’s constituon?

We have no problems adding backward compatibility when we have finished our
proof of concept. As you can see with FeLaMiMail it is no good idea to try
new ideas in the stable codeline. When we have finished our prove of
concept, we can start thinking about how to add backward compatibility. We
also stated this multiple times. But of course you could also have asked.

As i have read this on other lists. Our proof of concept is limited to 4
applications. That’s because it is a proof of concept. It doesn’t mean that
we plan that there will be no other modules available for eGoupWare anymore.
That’s something we never stated. You assumed it instead of asking us about
our position.

Also making Cornelius and me reponsible for the current situation, is just
to easy. Ralf forced us into this situation. I wouldn’t expect from him any
other action. But at least from Pim or Miles i would have expected at least
a email asking about our point of view.

Take back this vote, if you really take care about the project and start
acting as admins who take care for the project.

This vote will not solve any of the current problems in the project, it will
make the situation just more worse for the project.
If you think that we should leave the project, please say so. But don’t try
to use that stupid vote to reach your goal.

i absolutely agree with Lars.

I posted the following to the core-list, but I don’t know if it my post get’s accepted, so I will post my statement again here:

let me share my feelings about that:

Apart from any technical issue, I think the voting would have really damaging consequences for the future of eGW, so my vote will be also -> NULL.

Furthermore I really have to re-think my contributing to the project if very,very valuable people like Lars and Conny get kicked out of the project that way. Yes, you could say “it’s their own decision”, but if working together is soooo hard in eGW, they are forced to make those decisions and with votings like that you push them in the wrong direction. They already changed their name. Where is the problem for eGW?

Metaways currently pays three fulltime-devels for evaluating things we currently just dream of (and if we are honest, had one of us really time to evaluate dojo or extJS? No.) My attempt of implementing dragNdrop has been really poor. Fine ! I’m happy that people with knowledge and time do it better. So, please … LET THEM DO THEIR WORK and let us all be a bit more “open-minded”. And yes, maybe it’s hard to re-integrate that idea into eGW. Maybe it’s really impossible. But where is the damage? None. But it’s a piece of chance that will be offered for the whole project, so my appeal for you is to support these guys and not kick them out that way.

I also request the admins to think about the large amount of contributions Conny and Lars have given to the project and how valuable eGW got with that. I don’t want to have an eGW in future with just one full-time devel and persons like me, who just contribute if they find time. That’s not an acceptable background for enterprises and I often have to think of that if persons ask me if they should switch to eGroupware.

Admins: please do what you can to keep eGW worthy and don’t divide it into weak chunks of “believers of the one and worthiest code”. Keep your mind free from struggles of the past, you’re professionals. I think, the biggest benefit, for Stylite AND Metaways, will result if we work together.

So, please cancel that vote in order to express your liberality to people who want to improve eGW !!!

To throw in my 2 cents, I’d like to observe one thing:

Opensource groupware projest already suffer from extreme fragmentation.

You have eGroupWare, phpGroupWare (remember the past!), OpenGroupware,
Horde, Open-Xchange, Coefficient, Citadel, PHProjekt, MoreGroupware,
Hipergate, Weborganizer, Groupsuite, TWIG, TUTOS, and the list goes
on…

Clearly, the emphasis should be on consolidation, not separation.

To we should try hard to overcome any differences in our goals and try
to integrate them.
We should try to forget personal offences, and, should difficult
situations like this occur, try to understand the situation of others
and reasons for their position and their actions.

Let’s also always try to apply lex parsimoniae: “entities should not
be multiplied beyond necessity”.

Now this is a statement that makes sense.

From a technical and functional point of view, eGW is still a great
product and Tine2.0 looks promising to me.

With the current situation however, technical and functional motivations
are not the most decisive ones.
No urge to change my role as a user (now everyone is relieved of
course :-), but my very modest role as eGW developer did end.
No problem of course (who the hell is that other Oscar?), but if other
developers like Christian make that same decision, it will become a
problem, not to mention the loss of Lars and Conny.

Since it came to this point, there not much that can be done to turn
back time. My suggestions would be:

1. Sort out the personal issues first, and do this off-list.

2. Next, the admins should look at all possible options together
   with Lars and Conny.
   If I say “the admins”, I mean 3 people. Right now I do have the
   impression there’s one admin being backed by two others every once in a
   while.

3. Choose new admins. At this moment, only Ralf acts as an admin. Pim
   and Miles are hardly ever heard. I think that’s a dangerous situation,
   since Ralf is the most active developer (by far) and the most (only?)
   active admin. Ralf is invaluable for the project, but right now, the
   suggestions is Ralf is the project and everybody else is helping him.
   Lars and Conny aren’t at the moment; now see what happens.

I wish everybody wisdom.

Hi,

Sort out the personal issues first, and do this off-list.

That’s a really important thing to do. I don’t want to loose Lars and Conny for the project, neither. As you read the mails of the people involved, you will see that most arguments have already been stated several times. And discussing it all over again, adding personal accusations doesn’t help.

I know a method, that can be used to sort such a situation. I was main part of a really stuck discussion in an NGO, where things had really become personal. The method (we used professional moderators, specialised in conflicts) worked really great. I already moderated lots of meetings and some conflict situations and I could give it a try, I could write a mail to the most involved persons, explaining some more, but I don’t want to obtrude myself upon the people involved.

Also some other people offered such help in the past days and I’m really
happy about all that offers. This is a very good example, how you can help a
project without being a software developer.
