A demented view of the technical social fabric of egw…
Nice ascii art. Haven’t seen something like this for a very long time
anymore.
The user base is nervous. Which ‘?’ will it be?
I understand that the current situation is very “special” for the users of
eGroupWare. But I can’t see, how it should be more worse/not so good than it
has been in the past.
In past we have been talking only about changes between 1.0 and 1.2 for
example. And between each release has been at least 1 one year. If we follow
this logic, version 2.0 of eGroupWare is at least 2 years away in “standard
eGroupWare” time. I personally wouldn’t care about what will happen in 2
years or later. I would care about what will happen in the near time.
And in the near time we have 2 things that will happen. eGroupWare 1.4 get’s
maintained and advanced by Ralf. Tine 2.0 will reach a point in the first
quarter of 2008 where the eGroupWare developer community can decide if it
will be a good codebase for eGroupWare 2.0. If we as community has decided
about it, it will be very clear for the users, how the longterm future of
eGroupWare will look like.
Is it really important for the user, which ‘?’ it will be? As I’m also a
user of software, it is totally unimportant for me, which technology KDE 4.0
will use for example. But it is important for me, that KDE still evolves.
And KDE 4.0 will rock! And so will eGroupWare 2.0. On which technical base
ever.
