Does SyncML work?

Hi,

Does syncML actually work, or am I wasting my time. I have spent more than
10 hours on reading everything I found on the forums and testing this
setup as described in the Howto, running php5 as a cgi, and yet I have not
been able to get it to work.

Egroupware from the tar.bz2 1.2.05
PHP 5.1.6 built as a cgi, as described in a nnumber of howtos
mysql.4.xx on a different server,
Pear::Log installed (how can I check if it is the one for php4 or php5?)
OS: FC3 (and no chance to upgrade in the near future)

Authentication is set to “Mail”

Testclients where Funambol, Synthesis, a Sony phone,

no success, so far.

Logfiles tell me that the client send the username and then gets a 407 ,
lateron an Authentication required, and ends up with either "Invalid Data"
or something about Header Information missing.

Logfiles are in wbxml format in /tmp/sync

My users are quite happy with egroupware and would be delighted to have a
sync facilty for their pda’s and mob phones, but I am afraid I am at the
end of my tether right now.

Hi Peter,

I have been trying to get it to sync for a palm client here, I posted some
questions to user list a few days ago:

I have some questions regarding the use of the syncml client software to
sync palms (wifi) with our egw setup.

The user has a palm, installed test version of the syncml client, to
evaluate before purchase.

He tries to sync with the url /egroupware/rpc.php and has the
calendar config set to ‘calendar’ but it will not sync.

Do i need to turn something on in the server? I have our production site
running branch 1.2 with latest fixes and a test server with the trunk on it.
Both have the syncml directory and setup shows the apps installed. I don’t
have any sort of admin configuration setup that I can see. Are there setup
docs I just can’t seem to find on the egroupware.orgwiki/forums/knowledgebase?

Most of the postings abou this are related to working clients that are just
having some trouble syncing specific types of events/todo’s/etc, I am
looking for basic setup for a user with a palm.

No reply yet though.

I was under the impression that you only need to have the syncml directory
in your egroupware to have it working. It is not an app you need to turn on
as a server, maybe I am wrong? It seems like my users palm just needs to get
the settings for the client right? I am also out of ideas now.

I just got a request from the support department for the rest of the
University here and they would like to deploy egroupware if it will support
mobile devices. I am unable to tell them that it works yet, though I see
many postings with questions. Palms seem like a standard mobile device that
would be nice to have a simple howto for in the wiki, don’t you think?

Concerning the trunk version: since 2006-10-25 syncML works just fine for me;
that day Lars did the following changes that helped alot!
“r22731: when synchronizing using syncml, we already have php based session
started…”

Ok, so all the user needs to fill in on the palm is the
url/egroupware/rpc.php and ‘calendar’?

I will ask him to try it on the trunk server i have running.

Did you need to setup anything on the egw server side?

Hi,

I’m using it in 1.2.106 and in trunk. It’s working in both versions.

AFAIK it does not work together with icalserv, cause icalserv needs
a diferent vcard interpreter.

nope: “./calendar” – dot-slash-calendar! – I suspect this to be the error…

I will ask him to try it on the trunk server i have running.

no… Just try to access url/egroupware/rpc.php – it will either display
errors (then you need to fix them, of course) or “You should access this URL
only with a SyncML enabled device.” then it should just work!

Hmm… I never tried the Syntesis client – I just use it with the builtin
version of SyncML in some mobile phones and want to use
http://www.opensync.org/ later on as well (though I did not try it up to
now).
I also extended the builtin sync profile to better match the supported fields
of my mobile (Nokia 6670/Series60). Modifying supported fields is really,
really nice and works amazingly well!

It is working with current svn trunk.I don’t know if it is working with PHP
cgi. Ever only used the Apache PHP module.I don’t know it will work with
Mail authentication. I always tested with LDAP or SQL auth, but i don’t
think that this is a problem.

do you need to remove? egwical and icalsrv directories to make use of the
syncml? Or is it just one of the classes in these directories that is

I’m using it in 1.2.106 and in trunk. It’s working in both versions.
AFAIK it does not work together with icalserv, cause icalserv needs a
diferent vcard interpreter.
At least for trunk this is not true: I use both and they work just fine. There
is only one grave bug with icalsrv when using resources: Every time you save
your calendar from an offline client all booked resources disappear.
But – except for that – they peacefully coexist (in trunk).

that’s the reason why we need to change the place from were iCalServer
loads the iCal transformers, if we can’t merge both into one.

Hope to get some help from you all today, I have a Palm TX for the day to
test this.

I connect to my server, watching my apache access and error logs I see this
on the palm when only syncing Events (the rest is set to Never sync, also
tried with ‘calendar’ and ‘./calendar’ for the connection path):

Palm connects ok, starts to transmit data (shows 3/3 items) and then shows
’Waiting’ and finally ends with an error message “Invalid Data” ending the
sync attempt.

Hmm… I never tried the Syntesis client – I just use it with the builtin

Please set $conf[‘log’][‘priority’] to PEAR_LOG_DEBUG
in egroupware/phpgwapi/inc/horde/config/conf.php. Then you will get a very
detailed log in /tmp/egroupware_syncml.log. Make sure this file is empty.
Start one sync and send me this file.

After a firmware update of my E61 I also run into a problem syncing the device against trunk. The answer I get is “Falsche Serveradresse”. Find attached the log and the session’s log. A second device with the same firmware version updated a bit earlier is working fine. The only difference I could state out is that the second device is in sync since a while with the server data. The not any more syncing one is almost emtpy. Server is trying a slow sync for that reason.

Switched back to 1.2.106. The updated device synced again. I compared the egw_synmldevinfo with each other. During the sync against 1.2.106 the table got updated with the new value for dev_swversion and the changed dev-datastore as well which showed completely different values with the old firmware . The tables in trunk didn't get an update during the sync attempt. Then I deleted the corresponding row in egw_synmldevinfo. But there occured no update during the sync attempts as I would have had expected. The second device which is to be seen in the tables is working fine. I added the device_id to that concatenation. Automatic insert while attempting to sync didn’t work. I replicated the first entry and inserted the associated user to the syncml_syncmldeviceowner table by hand. Now sync is working again with the updated E61 device. Sadly the formerly working ./caltasks sync source isn’t working anymore Don’t know why.

Looked a bit into the deviceinfo table and found there a unique concatenation of swversion, device model and device manufacturer. Thats not a good idea because one would often run into the situation to have the same combinations of these values. What for is this concatenation in use?
