Address book search issues

Hello,
When we search in the addressbook we are finding that we get stuck with the search text. We can clear out the search field and hit search, but the previous search texts re-appears in this box.

Any ideas?

It’s very strange, it’s like the search gets stuck, sometines with the last entry, othertimes with a blank entry. Whatever you type in the system clears it when you click search.

I found this error in the logs, ajusted memory in PHP.ini from 32M to 64M but still get the same error in the log.

Hi Nick,

what I encountered is:
when you perform an advanced search, you’ll get stuck to that result until you clear the fields manually in the advanced search and hit search again.

That’s definitely a bug and we should fix that.

I’ll use this chance to talk with the other devs about my thougts on the search, maybe we can find a better solution for the search in general. My thougts are:

• The quick search should give a less “huge” result. If you search for e.g. two words at the moment, we get an “OR” result. This should be an “AND”.

• The quick search should just search for n_family, n_given and org_name and email. Our users are often irritated if they get results just by having the search string in the notes of a contact. If this is a conflict for others, we maybe should consider to make an option of that: “Adressbook fields for a general search”.

• We should have a “Clear search filter” button.

• We should clear the Advanced search filters before doing a new search to avoid having strange empty results.

I’ll try to put some work in that if my timesheet allows it. So, please post your comments here.

We don’t use the advance search so perhaps we have adifferent issue.

It would be good if you could select which fields to search on and the order they should be displayed. I changed the order by altering the …display.inc.php file (I’m not a developer so took me a while to find it).

We use quite a lof of custom fields and it would be good if you could select which of these to display for filtering, I tried all sorts of things but could not find a way of doing it. Because of this, we have added a number of extra fields in the database which makes us non standard. I worked through the files and worked out how we can upgrade without losing data though.

Our addressbook screens are very different from the standard as we are using this more as a Service Management tool, the addressbook holds machine & contact info and we use the tracker and infolog to record activity against a machine.

We have SQL scripts that run in the backgroud updating some of the custom fields to show such things as number of days to contract expiry. I’m also looking at scripting the creation of tracker tickets when a machine contract is close to expiry.

One thing that would be really usefull for us would be the ability to create a tracker ticket from the addressbook link page and also filter the links page to display different types of link such as only show open tracker tickets or just addressbook links etc.

Sorry went on a bit there, I will continue to test searching in addressbooki.

Just tested the advanced search and it does seem to work better that the general search. The problem we have with this is thast we would need to customise the advanced seasrtch page. Do you know if thi is possible?

Hi Christian,

first of all, we already asked ralf to fix /change the search from "or"
back to “and”. But don’t know when he will work on it …

On one hand i like the idea of using less fields for the quick search
… but on the other hand the quick search is much faster that typing
everything in the advanced search. And for example not searching in the
custumfields will be different from the other apps.

May be we can use only the “name fields” and all fields defined as
"fields from Organisation" - i think this is already a configuration of
addressbook? Not so good is, that you can’t select customfields there …

I think you misunderstood me. Our scenario is:

• user performs an advanced search in adressbook, e.g. given name.
• user is happy about the result
• user performs a general search in addressbook
• user wonders why he/she gets no result

therefore, the advanced search should be automatically resetted before the next general search.

My users feel very unhappy about the search at the moment. I think this is a subject to speak about, it degrades EGw in the user’s mind. I also know that the search (especially with custom fields) has to be considered from multiple views. Therefore, I would be happy if we can put our minds together in a phone call if you find some time.

Hi now I understand.
But I disagree, since if I am not happy, and want to refine my search by a
generally available search pattern, the behavior we have is just what I
wanted.
In other words: there is a need for the behavior you suggested, AND there is
a need, for the behavior that is,
since extended search assumes you know in which field you want to search.
You can not search in all fields for the wanted pattern, unless you type it
in.
The Scenario is

• user performs an advanced search in adressbook, e.g. postal code.
• user is not really happy about the result, and wants to narrow it down
  using this resultset, as the extended search result is a bigger set of what
  he wanted

(sadly that is not working as expected either :-()

I agree, that the user may get easyly confused, but users often get
confused, as they tend to click away, and do not read, what an application
tells them.
And the applikation does tell, that it is using advanced search mode.
We could print that in red, as eye-catcher…

you’re right in position of a developer’s view. But I think that GUIs
are for users, developers can use SQL queries It’s impossible to
explain the current, really difficult behaviour to a normal user and I
think we as developers should get used to the fact that user’s do not
read what we write in our documentation or application messages. Our
applications should be easy and straightforward to use.

I think the right way would be to address the technical focused user
with the Advanced search and to make the user who is more stuck to “grow
plants” happy with the common search.

A daily situation at the moment is that the latter named user calls me
and says: “hey, why is EGw giving me 200 results if I just want to find
Mr Tom Meier??”… I think you know what I mean.

But … writing could be so misunderstood. Let’s have a short talk. That
makes things more clear.

I think you misunderstood me. Our scenario is:

• user performs an advanced search in adressbook, e.g. given name.
• user is happy about the result
• user performs a general search in addressbook
• user wonders why he/she gets no result

therefore, the advanced search should be automatically resetted before the
next general search.

My users feel very unhappy about the search at the moment. I think this is
a
subject to speak about, it degrades EGw in the user’s mind. I also know
that
the search (especially with custom fields) has to be considered from
multiple views. Therefore, I would be happy if we can put our minds
together
in a phone call if you find some time.

The problem we are having is not with what the search does, once we understood how it works it was ok. Our issue is that the general search somtimes gets locked to the last search. You can delete the entry in the search field but it re-appears when you click the search button.

Hi Klausi,

I think you misunderstood me. Our scenario is:

• user performs an advanced search in adressbook, e.g. given name.
• user is happy about the result
• user performs a general search in addressbook
• user wonders why he/she gets no result

therefore, the advanced search should be automatically resetted before the
next general search.

My users feel very unhappy about the search at the moment. I think this is
a
subject to speak about, it degrades EGw in the user’s mind. I also know
that
the search (especially with custom fields) has to be considered from
multiple views. Therefore, I would be happy if we can put our minds
together
in a phone call if you find some time.

what I encountered is:
when you perform an advanced search, you’ll get stuck to that
result
until
you clear the fields manually in the advanced search and hit search
again.

That’s definitely a bug and we should fix that.

I’ll use this chance to talk with the other devs about my thougts on
the
search, maybe we can find a better solution for the search in
general.
My

thougts are:

• The quick search should give a less “huge” result. If you search
  for
  e.g.
  two words at the moment, we get an “OR” result. This should be an
  "AND".

• The quick search should just search for n_family, n_given and
  org_name
  and
  email. Our users are often irritated if they get results just by
  having
  the
  search string in the notes of a contact. If this is a conflict for
  others,
  we maybe should consider to make an option of that: “Adressbook
  fields
  for
  a
  general search”.

• We should have a “Clear search filter” button.

• We should clear the Advanced search filters before doing a new
  search
  to
  avoid having strange empty results.

I’ll try to put some work in that if my timesheet allows it. So,
