please try if addressbook/inc/class.addressbook_ldap.inc.php from trunk
fixes the problem, I’m pretty sure it should be working in 1.8 without
problem.

Hi!
Revision 34644 in 1.8 causes lettersearch in the addressbook to fail
(display all results) with addresses in LDAP on a MySQL based
installation. Sorry, I currently do not find the time to dig deeper into
the patch. Maybe it is a simple fix, but I can only try to start
investigating in a few days.
