Best configuration for filemanager?

Can someone please explain the “best” way to configure the file manager? There are 3 choices ( “Filesystem” ; “Database”; and “custom set via filemanager / cli.php mount” )

One consideration as the guy who will be in charge if it, I’d like to remove files / folders when needed regardless of who put them in, and be able to identify the heavy users. I do not see a way to set limits, so it would be great to monitor usage.

One last question - I tried to look at versioning, but it says I need to “become root to enable or disable versioning on a directory”

Who is “root”? I tried my admin login but that fails. I tried mysql user login but that fails.

The first 2 allow you to select where to store file contents (metadata
is allways in database). Recommendation is to leave filesystem, as PHP’s
PDO plugin for MySQL is limited to a couple of MB files

3. setting only means you mounted some other filesystems in EGroupware’s
   virtual filesystem and can NOT manage it with setup anymore. EPL has
   it’s own management tools (Filemanager >> Admin >> Versioning) or in CE
   you can use filemanger/cli.php mount for that.

root user for filemanager is more a role then a real user. By default it
is only the setup user (usually called “admin”) with his password. You
can give other users that role by adding them in setup >> edit current
configuration to “User names, comma-separated, which can get VFS root
access (beside setup user)”. These users can then use their regular
username/password to become root (a bit like sudo in Linux).

Thank you for the information! I have changed the setting to the first (Filesystem - Default) as it was on the third selection. Now I begin to use this function, gain proficiency, and show others how beneficial it will be.
