Cannot download files/folders using WebDAV

Hi everyone,

First of all I’m sorry for posting what may be Obvious to fix, but I have been trying for days and cannot resolve this issue myself.

I need to copy all of my files/folders from egroupware 1.6 filemanager to a local folder. I have Configured WebDAV and can see all of the egroupware folders/files, but when I select all - copy the folders in WebDAV and then try to paste into a local folder, it seems to be doing something, but even after hours, only pastes some of the folders and sub-folders, but not all and none of the files within the sub-folders.

I have noticed that each sub-folder in WebDAV also contains a folder with the name of the parent folder. Perhaps that is what is messing up the copy/paste.

Is this behaviour anything that other people have seen. I just need to download all of the folders/files from filemanager, but can’t do it. I would download file by file, but there are several GB of data in multiple sub-folders

Any assistance with solving this issue would be very gratefully accepted.

I don’t know if this is helpful, but I found that the WEBdav in EGW (1.8 here) has a limit on folder nesting (or perhaps its URL character length). I had to move many nested sub-folders up a level or 2 when I was transferring a huge block of files, or else I was getting errors.

It looks like the whole WEBdav file issue is going to kill EGW for us after I have invested almost 2 years into pushing for it here. A few key players have encountered painfully slow file read/writes, and broken connections, and since they are all old school windows users, they are not liking the fact that we need 3rd party software to access the shares. The irony is they are agitating for sharepoint, because “this whole egroupware thing is just too complicated”…

That was a limit in the depth of sub-queries in MySQL. It should no
longer exist since a few month, as we detect the individual limit of
your server and generate less nested sub-queries.

And how much are they going to have to pay for M$ Sharepoint ? I’m sure
it isn’t free.

Or is it that they will get the usual M$ ‘educational’ discounts (read
bribes) ? I spent a long time convincing my users to go Open Source, and
it wasn’t without some fights. But none of them would go back. It’s like
weaning babies off their dummies.

Though not always the greatest supporter of some of the ways and means
of Stylite, if you are looking for a professional solution then it may
be worth paying - you going to have to, one way or another.

It would be a shame to admit defeat, throw in the towl and chuck all
your hard work away. And you will probably consign the students to the
same mentality as well.

Just wish I could give you some help but it’s not my area of experience.

I have been pushing to go for the enterprise edition, but have been up against the entrenched mindset of “nobody ever got fired for buying Microsoft” even though they should have been fired (and drawn and quartered)

I have too many people pulling in too many directions (Mac users, PC users, Android users, all having fixed their problems with Outlook/Dropbox/gmail/google docs), and none of them want to give up their pet even as they scream for a better collaboration/sharing solution that will work for all; everyone but THEY should adapt.

Hi guys,

Thanks for your responses. It is a very interesting debate. I generally prefer using open source wherever I can as I believe in its ethos. Although problems tend to occur when it comes for support.

Regarding my specific issue. Is the consensus then that the only fix for this is to use WebDAV, but to move all of my sub-folders up several levels? I do have a very large sharred company drive, with a lot of sub-folders in it.

Ever it was thus. How on earth did we get in such a god awful mess ? And
more to the point, how do we dig ourselves out of it ?

My guess is that it is because companies are greedy and want ALL of the
pie, rather than trying to compromise, work together and all get a
slice. So I guess it’s down to the shareholders who want their profits,
and who are probably the same people who wonder why nothing works
together. Ironic !

The whole subject is fascinating. I often wonder where we will be in 100
years time.

I think the problem with ‘support’ is one of mentality. We (I found
myself in this position as well to start with) think that the software
is ‘free’ so everything else should be as well.

The fact is that no one can afford to write professional software for
nothing. Everyone has to make a living somehow. I guess M$ get double
bubble - write rotten software that they charge you to buy and then
charge you (or someone else does) again to fix it.

I think that if you use OS on a professional basis you have to cost in
some professional support somewhere. It can’t all be free. I still think
it is cheaper, and is certainly more flexible. I tend to think of 'free’
as ‘I am free to choose what I want’, rather than being shackled and
locked in. But that freedom still has a price.

Stick to your guns though. You have chosen the right path.

It is actually a retread of an older slogan “Nobody ever got fired for
buying IBM.” which was part frustration and part grudging respect for
IBM’s solid if not cutting edge offerings and their legendary customary
service. Substituting Microsoft is at least in part ironic.
