Can't login

Hi, just installed egroup under plesk with all different admin users and wanted to login but it won’t let me in.

How does this work ?

1. run http://“yoursite”/egroupware/setup
2. fix error and all warning you can
   3 login http://“yoursite”/egroupware

It is a fantastic package if you are willing to take the time to learn it.

Thx David … yea setup first that’s the key.

With the “Checking the eGroupWare Installation” I have the problem that directories are not recognized although there :

Your files directory ‘var/www/vhosts/yourdomain/web_users’ does not exist
Your backup directory ‘var/www/vhosts/yourdomain/web_users/db_backup’ does not exist

I’ve checked it, they are there, I even chmod 777 them

Do you have experience with this ?

Look at the setup configuration information closely. Your backup and
files directories must be outside of you web server document root.
Since you want to keep the files when you change OS’s, etc. I put them
at “/home/egwfiles/…”

Also make sure the directories are readable and writeable by the web
server For example chmod apache:apache on RedHad/Mandriva style
distros or wwwrun:www on SuSE style distros.

Do that and you will be good!

Well of course you have to create the directories!!!

md -p /home/egwfiles/backup
md /home/egwfiles/web_users

and so on. You create the directories, then you tell egw where they are
in the setup.

Now we know your web server runs as user=root and group=root. Now you
need to change the ownership of the /home/egroupware directories

chown apache:apache /home/egwfiles/

Will do it. Properties of 0770 should suffice. Make sure the permissions
on the home/ directory is as least 0755 (it should be the default)

Check it at

/"yourserver"/egroupware/setup

Click on "Step 2" Configuration

If you have made the appropriate changes, then you should be good!

Another tip for you is:

After logging into egroupware normally, select "Admin" on the far right

side of the icon bar;

Select "DB backup and restore"

Schedule a backup; example: enter "day of week=2-6" "hour=3" and  then

hit “schedule”. This will backup your database Tues.-Sat. at 3:00 am
effectively backing up your data after Mon.-Fri.

After a few days check “DB backup and restore” again to make sure your
backups are occurring. If they are not, then manually add a crontab as
follows:

Select "Asynchronous timed services" under "Admin"

Enter "day of week=2-6" "hour=3" as we did above;

Click on "install crontab"

This will force your database backup through cron

Good luck, take your time learning eGroupWare, there is a lot to this
great groupware package. Then, get involved in this mailing list and
help others who are struggling with egw, just like you were helped
here. Report bugs through the tracker if they occur. There are very few
basic bugs left for the “stable” package other than the “gee, I wish
it worked this way” issues. Your database is safe, it "almost never"
will get corrupt, unless you are using “alpha” or “beta” third party
tools not part of the basic package, like funambul or syncml phone and
outlook sync tool. Then if it does, not to worry, your latest backup is
there to install and everything is good.

Have fun it is a great package, and the best out there.

thx for taking the time to keep me on track with this program. I really appreciate your commitment to the users.
Are you the developer of this program ? I may have things in common with developing some aspects of eGroupware which may be interesting for you. I started to develop a similar task for helping to control tasks, objectives, accounting and inventory, as well as rating functions for the task-commitment of the user , a user-hierarchy (company position), and automatic function + checklists for returning tasks and a company wiki kind manual of all aspects coming up in the company. I developed this as the “producer” of this program but not as a programmer. This project was paused since 3 years but still is very current in solving the needs of people running and managing a company with all it’s needs.

Nope, I’m just a friendly lawyer and engineer that is taking time to
give back to the community that has given me so much over the years.

Ralf Becker and Lars Kneschke are two of the developers here that I have
spoken with, (there are a lot more developers as well, that I haven’t
met yet). They are both great and have done fantastic work with this
package.

I looked on and off for several years at the groupware alternatives to
Outlook, etc… I have tried a good number. Until egw 1.0, there really
wasn’t any competition to MS groupware packages. Egw 1.2 was a great
leap forward and actually provided an enterprise level groupware package
that gave good reason to look at an opensource replacement. Egw 1.4 is
fantastic, and in my opinion, better than a majority of all groupware
package available today both commercial and opensource. My office relies
on it. And since I am a very damn picky sysadmin, that says a lot…

Like I said, have fun with the package, take your time to learn it,
and I am willing to bet you will be amazed at how elegant this package
really is.

Hi David,
sounds really good. I also was looking for good alternatives to MS for a long time but had no time for a while of 3 years to look into it any deep further. Now the times have changed and really amazing work has been done in the open source community. I’m happy about the development also of framework which is done in the meantime with stuff like joomla mambo etc. … seems the time has come that open source solutions get comprehensive with all day tasks at a higher level.
