Hi Detox,
Thank you for coming back to me and offering to help it is most
appreciated. Sorry for the delay in my response been under the weather
lately.
I am a complete newbie so setting this up I am finding difficult.
My reasons are; I am in the process of setting up a charity to open a
Timebank.
I want to use Linux and I think Mint will be my best option. I will be
looking at a server to run three to four office desktops and possibly
six other nodes for tuition in basic computer operations and searches
for youth education. This is not going to happen over night but I was
thinking of installing EGW on my desktop and finding my way around.
I have set a Skype [ syd.c.martin ] so we can get in touch but I have
never used it before. You can use this e-mail as well for contact if
that suites.
Looking forward to your help,
Hi,
If you want an easy to setup server that is secure out of the box, just
works, is secure, and easy to manage, then take a look at SME -
www.contribs.org
EGW is pretty straightforward to setup on it (as well as file sharing
etc etc), but you may need a few tweaks to httpd.conf
Think there was an egroupware addon that someone built but can’t
remember - have a look on the wiki.
Help on the forums or via the mailing list, or here.
I’ve used SME for all sorts over the years and we run Xubuntu desktops
as they are simple, light and quick. It’s easy to install only the apps
your users need, and to lock them down a bit.
Personally I tried Mint but never quite got on with it - it’s NEARLY
the same but not quite, and that was frustrating.
Either way, best to keep your web applications on a machine built for
the job - a server. Saves cluttering up your desktop with a pile of
stuff you don’t really need like httpd, php mysqld etc.
Last bit of advice… if you’re a newbie then the first thing you
really need to do is read a lot
Saves asking questions that you
should know answers too if you have RTFM. You are more likely to get
help that way - lots of devs CBA if you can’t be bothered to help yourself.
