Egroupware - debian: lightthp instead apache

Checking the packages I can see the egroupware-core package depends on the apache web server. The documentation says it is okay to use lighttpd instead apache. The doc also advices to use the .deb packages because the easier updates.

My guestions:

Is it possible to change the .deb package to depend on apache2|lighttpd ? I would be happy even if I have to manually do some configurations if necessary.

The egroupware has built-in update feature is it still recommended to use the .deb packages? Must be more comfortable but the updates could be handled by the egroupware too.

I still wish to use lighttpd even if I have to install the egroupware manually. Please tell me if it is a really bad idea

For Debian/Ubuntu packages this should be easy to do, not sure about the
different rpm versions of the distros, it might not be possible to
specify apache|lighttpd.

by the egroupware too.

No egroupware does not updates itself, as the recommend way of
installing it safely, is not to give the webserver write rights for the
docroot. If you use .deb or .rpm packages from our repository, updates
works as with all other packages on you box either automatic or by
manually runing aptitude update && aptitude upgrade

I still wish to use lighttpd even if I have to install the egroupware
manually. Please tell me if it is a really bad idea

All our hosting runs on Lighttpd, cant be to bad

I dont think installing Lighttpd with EGroupware will run out of the
box, as it does with Apache: there’s no equivalent for
/etc/apache/conf.d, where every package can dump it’s Apache
configuration. So you have to add at least an alias for EGroupware to
/etc/lighttpd/lighttpd.conf:

alias.url = (
"/egroupware/" => “/usr/share/egroupware/”,
)

AND put php configuration into the main php.ini.

Btw. we offer as part of our EGroupware Premium Line a virtual appliance
running EGroupware with Lighttpd, MariaDB and Memcached, targeted for
high EGroupware workloads.

Somewhere I have read an installation step like “activate self update” it would be a apt-get update && apt-get install egroupware like step?

It is okay to set up the apache configuration under lighttpd since in this days (months actually :)) I migrating my old server from apache to nginx + lighttpd and did it a few times Fortunately many debian package has dependency on either apache or lighttpd (or some on any web server) and php so it did not broke any system. Thinking about it I could download the .deb repository and manually change the dependencies but I would do this in case I can hope the “real” repository will also change in the not so far future

Anyway we are a small company we have no high load neither many users. But my server has many OpenVZ containers installed and so far I was able to get rid of the apache what I have loved but since I have changed to lighttpd (and nginx proxy) I have a new love

If you install cron-apt, it should also keep EGroupware up-to-date.

Probably not, because if we depend there on apache2|lighttpd users will
start opening bugs, because EGroupware with Lighttpd does not work
out-of-the-box, as it does with Apache.

We usually install Apache2 and switch it off, that’s a one-time thing
you have to do, when you install Lighttpd AND we usually add lighttpd to
/etc/passwd and /etc/group with the uid/gid of www-data, BEFORE
installing Lighttpd to not have modify the permissions set for
Apache/www-data in EGroupware package.

Why not use nginx as Webserver, if you use it anyway?
It supports php via FastCGI, as does Lighttpd.

Hm, indeed. Thanks for the tip. It is way more easy to drop the apache

The nginx runs on the host machine and proxies the requests. Not sure if the nginx better than the lighttpd, have no such experience. And you have said that the cluster of the egw hosting services runs on lighttpd But I am open to any new - better - idea. I just have prepared a new containter and installed the mc and less so far (and fixed the timezone), so the next step could be anything
