Egroupware for school schedule and rooms

I am considering to use eGroupWare for a software project I got involved with, but I am not sure if it matches my needs and if it will be worth learning it – I have never used it before.
Basically I would need much LESS functionalities than what I see in the demo, AND I will have to implement some customized views that are not currently present because the general system does not model my specific client, which is a large music school that needs to manage the classrooms availability and the schedule of the courses (avoid schedule conflicts, etc.). I don’t need priorities, attaching documents, and a LOT of great drop-down menus and buttons I have seen in the demo. So how flexible is this? Is it easy to modify/add PHP code? I am good at programming in PHP, but so far I have always developed my systems from scratch so I had complete control: I understand there are useful frameworks out there, but I am unease with losing control… I’m sure you get what I mean!
So would egroupware be what I am looking for? Any suggestion would be HIGHLY appreciated, really. Thank you!!!

EGW can be modified and expanded - you can also remove from view any of the modules you dont plan to use.

We have successfully leveraged EGW for inventory & equipment sign-out. I am trying to push for greater use of the resource module for conference management (like a hotel). There is an easy-to-use panel for adding custom fields in the resource manager and other modules.

You might not get a lot of response from the EGW team on this list for a while. They are very busy with finalizing the latest release.

Since EGW is built on top of MySQL or PostgreSQL, you can build extra tables and fields, and use php to interact.
