Hi Mike,
Stylite broke my installation with the latest update and I’m upset.
Sorry if we broke something, that was never our intention, thought I
disagree with your further statements:
First off, the latest update overwrote my open source GNU GPL licensed
version with an EPL licensed version. Switching user’s to the EPL
version of EGroupware is NOT an update, it’s a usurpation. Secondly,
my family and I can no longer share our information since access
control, which was originally available under the GNU GPL version, is
only offered to Stylite customers. Lastly, I no longer have a
community to contribute to.
This is plainly wrong.
EGroupware 14.x is still released under GPL 2+, as was version 1.8!
Access control is available in 14.x, in fact it has been enhanced a lot
with reports, so a user can see now which:
- which rights he has to other users data
- which rights he or his admin grant other users to his data
- which applications he can run
Please don’t make such accusations, if you can find find a loved feature
in a new version.
Some features of Stylite’s EPL version 11.1 have found their way into
14.x and are now GPL licensed.
There is only one exception, that is to add more then the three stock
groups.
Group management is now an EPL feature, which has been newly developed
for 14.x as most parts of Administration app.
We offered all long-time community users a free replacement, so they
don’t loose functionality with their 14.x update.
I’m a veteran user and past contributor to EGW. I submitted code,
offered ideas, and provided support to the community which in turn has
helped make EGW the best in class product that it is today. EGroupware
would not be the product that is today without me and the many other
developers and users like myself who have contributed on-and-off over
the years. The latest update essentially absorbs the work that the
community has contributed to the project and encloses it.
Guess I’m not sure where to take this thread since anything I post is
redundant–what’s done is done. Stylite parted ways with the GNU GPL
version of Egroupware. Hopefully someone will start a fork of the 1.8
community version.
Stylite has put a ton of effort into this project and I respect that.
I wish it didn’t have to end this way!
That is your decision, we still value input from our users and
contributions of all kinds including code.
Plan is to move EGroupware code to Github after release of next version
to make contributions more easy.
Ralf
