We set now a final date for the 1.6 release:
Tuesday 25. November 2008
The slight delay is necessary mainly for two reasons:
- there’s currently a lot bug fixing activity in the area of SyncML and
iCal parsing (for SyncML, GroupDAV, CalDAV, …)
- to give press a one week advance notice about the release
We will have at least an other 2 release candidates this weekend and
the next week, before the final release.
It’s very important for the quality of the release that all testers keep
on testing every one of that release candidates (please no leaning back
now and waiting for the final release)!
Ralf,
I and everyone else commend your commitment to quality. It is the gold
standard by which open source projects should be measured. Too often (linux
distributions are a prime example) open source projects begin to focus more on
getting release “number next” out the door and lose sight of the most
fundamental question of whether release “number next” is ready to go out the door.
Nothing can cripple a project faster than a release that is basically
cripple-ware when it gets into the users hands. It is far more important to
show the discipline and dedication to quality that you have shown than to worry
about whether the numerically next version has been released.
There can be no doubt that the prudent approach is to build adequate pad into
the release date and be willing to slip the date by as long as is necessary to
satisfy yourself that the quality of your product reflects your vision of what
you are creating. Not to mention that it just makes damn good business sense.
The additional time and effort spent making sure it is right is paid back many
times over by the reduction of time and effort required to clean up after a bad
release. That is especially true from a support and patch standpoint.
Thank you for not having lost sight of what really matters when a man put his
name on a product.
Well Done!
