Hi Hans-Juergen,
Hi all!
With time going by, there are some compatbility problems with gallery
and phpfreechat and newer versions of PHP (deprecated warnings etc.).
To get ride of some of the php warnings and a security problem, if I
recall it right, we updated some time ago to phpFreeChat 1.3.
Gallery hasn’t been updated to their newest version since quite some time.
Both gallery and phpfreechat have been moved to a git repository.
http://gallery.menalto.com/gallery3_switches_to_git_and_github
http://www.phpfreechat.net/git/start
So I would like to ask the question if there is interest to update
support to new versions of e.g. gallery 3.0.2 now), seeing that we would
have to replace the simple svn:externals by some method to ask the user
to make the code available.
Not that I am promising to find the time to do the research in visible
time, but if I would start to investigate in these issues, I’d like to
do it in a way that is supported by the community…
So the approach would be:
- Check whether the files are available
or ask the user to provide the files (e.g. through a
Linux distribution install?)
- Check whether the files are configured or ask the user
to perform the configuration (i.e. redirect to the gallery installer)
- Use the files in a similar way as it is done today.
I think we are facing two different problems:
a) makeing the git repository available (eg. by syning it daily into our
svn repository)
b) getting the current version working with EGroupware (specially true
for Gallery)
Another approach is the forking of the code into eGroupware, but the
maintenance efforts would probably be a issue which we shouldn’t take
with a open source program available.
Dont think we really need to fork the code, as for both projects we used
their unmodified code in the past.
Would you agree on the approach? Did anyone already investigate on this?
I had a quick look with G2 about a year ago, but didn’t find more time
to inverstigate closer. Feel free to proceed …
For phpFreeChat the moved to Githug, but there’s no new release
currently, so I dont think there’s much to gain, 'til there’s a new release.
