Howdo I setup Out of Office?

Hi there,

I hope that one of you can assist with this. I have an egroupware 1.6 installation up and running and need to set up an Out of office (vacation) notice. All I can find looking through the guides is some vague instructions saying that their should be an option available in preferences. I cannot however find such an option.

Does anyone have any simple step by step guide on how to configure an out of office reply for an email account in egroupware?

Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Hi Mark,

out of office notice use sieve script and will only work with some mail
servers e.g. cyrus imap, for that reason you need to have cyrus and
sieve. Fulfilling both conditions, there is the preference for vacation
notice.

Thank you for your quick response. I have IMAP, but not cyrus imap or sieve. Is there any other way of getting an out of office to work? If not, does sieve work with other IMAP and is sieve easy to install/configure in a live environment with multiple users?

Hi Mark,

i’m not a system-administrator or technician, so i can not say how
difficult it is to install sieve on your IMAP-Server. As far as i know
there should be no problems with multiple users …

Which IMAP-Server do you use? I can ask my colleague if the
vacation-notice will work with it (having sieve installed).

sieve wotk with dovecot too.

But without more information about your system, noone could help you.

Bye the way: why 1.6? The 1.8 is the current one and there are a lot of usefull changes and features.

Hi there,

We use Courier IMAP.

The reason that we are on version 1.6 is because it was installed a couple of years ago and now has a number of active user accounts. Some customisations have also been made and I don’t want to risk breaking the system by upgrading.

Courier-IMAP doesn’t support the sieve feature…

What is your MTA : postfix, exim ?

You can easily migrate courier-imap to dovecot or cyrus… But there are
some tweaks to keep in mind :
-> the uids of each messages must be updated by a little script [1]. If
you do not update these uids, all your clients (pop and imap) will
download again the messages for offline use.
-> dovecot has a built’in deliver binary. You can keep maildrop or switch
to dovecot deliver
-> If you want to use the sieve filters, you must enable the sieve port
in your firewall configuration (default to 2000/tcp)

All your eGw configuration do not have to be updated, you will keep all
of your accounts

You may try an update of your MDA but do not remove courier for now, just
copy then update the MTA conf, so you will be able to switch back !

OK Courier don’t support SIEVE (my opinion)

Use dovecot and be happy!

dovecot is in all things better, Peer Heinlein the author of the german postfix book is the same view about dovecot.

And for updating eGroupware:

Why you don’t setup a backup testsystem, there you can try the change. It is a security reason too, 1.6 get no more bugfixes,…
