Hi Ralf,
I just wanted to thank you for you input and clarifying the development version
scheme. Although I have so much to say I think it’s time to close and let
actions speak louder than words. I just wanted to reply to one comment before I
close.
Ralf says:
“EGroupware will never be a dead end, but you might need to consider giving some
of the money you make with your clients back to ensure the constant development
of EGroupware.”
Although I would never buy a license for software (imagine the course of
humanity should Microsoft ever copyright and license a human language) but I
will guarantee that I will donate money the moment I get my head above water. It
is my social responsibility.
Mike
Hi Mike,
Hi Ralf,
I’m not trying to start a fight but I am only venting my frustrations
from my [a start-up] perspective. There are three versions listed in
the post (1.9.001, 1.7.003 and EPL 9.2). How anyone can make sense of
EGroupware Versions:
- odd versions are development version (Trunk): 1.7.003 or 1.9.001
- even versions are released community versions: 1.6 and soon 1.8
- versions prefixed with EPL (EGroupware Premium Line) are Stylite
subscription / commercial version
it is beyond me. I just don’t want to paint myself [or my clients] into
a corner and find out that I followed a track that leads to a dead end.
Another thing that concerns me is that my clients are at the mercy of a
few and the risk simply concerns me.
EGroupware will never be a dead end, but you might need to consider
giving some of the money you make with your clients back to ensure the
constant development of EGroupware.
We ensure this with the EPL subscription model, which is the only way to
get a released version with the newest open source features (not yet
released in a community version) and some extra features only available
in EPL, like eg. versioning, direct attaching / storing of VFS files in
FMail or other convenience features.
Some of the greatest open source developers that I’ve met are
libertarian socialists and are broke and living down and out - mainly
because they have to pay for their beer nonetheless : ). It is my
position that a more egalitarian constitution (a more ‘open’ source
approach) would attract more developers into the community and thereby
create a more robust software product from which we can all earn a living.
I tried that for many years. Current situation is: nearly all developers
(responsible for more then 95% of the commits) are on Stylite’s payroll.
That’s a simple fact.
Without the commercial EPL version, EGroupware open source project had
ceased to exist.
Good new is, more and more professional users appreciate the benefits of
EPL and ensure a constant development of EGroupware.
EGroupware is far-and-away the best (open source) groupware solution.
I’ve created some light applications and a clean [uncomplicated]
EGroupware template which I will upload shortly after I complete my
website - the interest in EGroupware has exceeded my ability to keep up
with client demand and still finish my storefront. I’m not thrashing
about but simply voicing my opinion - which others may or may not share.
Your last mail is in a “tone”, I’m happy to discuss and argue.
Ralf

Subject: Re: [eGroupWare-developers] Important steps before updating
to 1.8?
Hi Mike,
I have to say that your[ralf’s] answer was ‘clear as mud’
[incomprehensible,
baffling, opaque, unintelligible, uigennemsigtig, opak] - at least from an
architect’s frame of reference - and the ambiguity thus persuades me to
speak out. The republican constitution and the decision to maintain
separate
branches, (a for-profit branch and a not-for-profit branch) - I believe
deters open source developers and hinders the full potential of the
software. I suspect, given the nature of the constitution, that my voice
will be little heard, but I was persuaded anyway and I would recommend
that
the administrators take notice because sometime soon an open source
product
with democratic constitution will be developed and claim the groupware
throne.
If you comment on what I answered, please cite it.
I gave a short explanation, that 1.8 branch is NOT yet ready and listed
what needs to be done.
You should be able to decipher the short explanation “NOT yet ready” and
if you do not understand the rest, I suggest you wait 'til it’s ready
and not start a fight because you dont understand it.
If you can not understand that developers need to make a living too,
I suggest to go to a supermarket and nag them about free beer
Ralf
First of all, the 1.8 branch is NOT yet the 1.8 release or RC. That’s
why it’s not announced on the user lists.
Situation is the current: 1.8 is version vise higher then the previous
trunk (1.7.003). As it is not trunk based, but on EPL 9.2, there are a
few differences from trunk:
- global cat_owner 0 versus -1
- deleted flag in calendar
- bookmarks custom fields
- some emailadmin columns
- some sitemgr columns (depending how current your trunk is)
The current schema updates in 1.8, does not yet deal with the above
problems, it only works for updating from 1.6.
I will have a look this weekend, what is necessary to drop the new
columns when updating to 1.8. I will probably use the new global cat
owner in 1.8 too.
There will be definitely NO update from a current trunk (1.9.001) to 1.8!
