Installation check confusion

Hi,

I am a new would-be user of eGroupware. I am using Ubuntu 7.10 with mysql and
apache installed. I downloaded and unpacked eGW and pointed my browser (Firefox)
at the appropriate location and started by testing the installation. I got
errors as sdet out in the installation test report below. My understanding is
that this indictates that mysqld is not running. I checked the process list (ls
-A) and sure enough mysqld was not on the list. I used services-admin to check
the status of running services and manually started mysqld. According to the
process list below it is now running. But still the installation check fails.
Can someone suggest why this is? Or perhaps refer me to documentation i can read
on this issue?

don’t know. Is there a diagnostic I can do? I thought all recent Apache
versions were PHP enabled.

Apache is php enabled, but many distros package the php and perl database
modules seperately.
I don’t use a debian based distro, so I can’t give you an exact package name,
something like php-mysql or php5-mysql.

Well, here’s what I’ve done. I read through the docs some more and found out
about the XAMPP project. Looking it over it seemed to be what I’d need so I

uninstalled all packages related to apache and php and mysql
downloaded XAMPP and
unpacked it into /opt and
apt-get install-[ed] egroupware
Which leaves me with a XAMPP page that allows me to easily check the status of
what I think are all the relevant services installed and running. OK there.

The setup directory is /usr/share/egroupware/setup and there is a file called
setup.php but every time I try to open it with Firefox I get a choice to save it
to disk or not. If I save it to disk its useless, I’ve already got a copy, and
if I click on ‘open with firefox’ it just opens another ff tab and offers me the
same choices.

Still confused.

You just moved your problems to a different source. You only needed to add the
php-mysql modules to your original setup and you would have been OK. If you
are going to use a different webstack like XAMPP. you should just get the
source install of egroupware and extract it to the new webstacks docroot so
when you browse www.yourserver/egroupware/ you get the index.
You really shouldn’t mix package management types on a server unless you
REALLY know what you are doing. If it is Debian stick with apt and .deb
packages, if it is rpm based stay that way.

egroupware but i am back where I was ten days ago, with the check
installation failing. If I need to install some special version of mysql what
version is that? and where?

You are missing the php extension to access mysql, usually called
php(5)-mysql. I would also install php(5)-pdo as we start using it for
the same purpose in the development version.

You are missing the php extension to access mysql, usually called
php(5)-mysql. I would also install php(5)-pdo as we start using it for
the same purpose in the development version.

Thank you. I was able to use synaptic to find and install the php-mysql module
and that leaves me with only a warning about an extension needed for Oracle,
which I don’t plan to use. I did not see any package for php5-pdo, is there a
repository for that?

It seems Debian and Ubuntu do not package PDO

I used the following link to install it on Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper:

You dont need it for 1.4, thought you need it for the upcoming 1.6.
