Thanks - for now I have installed the 1.8.004.20121024 release which did not complain about missing dependencies. I will try installing the 1.8.004.20130322 release from the sourceforge tar package instead of using the deb packages for Ubuntu and see what happens. However, that is probably at least two weekends away.

I suspect your problem is that either
a) the pear Net_IMAP package is not installed - or the path is wrong
(NOTE: it is not currently maintained
see: http://pear.php.net/package/Net_IMAP/redirected); or
