I’ve got a problem on a server running Ubuntu like this:
uname -a
Linux web5.bcenclave.ca 3.13.0-79-generic #123-Ubuntu SMP Fri Feb 19
14:27:58 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
On this, as an administrative aid is running Virtualmin Pro running as
a module of webmin 1.782. The script installer says that egw version
1.8.007.20140512 is current and that an update to version 14.3.20160113
The version change from 1.8 to 14.3 is large so I deleted the
installation and tried reinstalling, getting messages like this:
Version change is not as big as it sounds, 14.3 is the direct successor
of 1.8, we changed the number schema to contain the year.

PHP module mysql is required …
Module is not available even after installation!
So what mysql module is needed?
Package of PHP MySQL extension is called php5-mysql under Ubuntu.
Do your self a favor an use our recommended installation method via
Ubuntu package manager aptitude or apt-get:
https://www.egroupware.org/en/technical/technical-information/installation-instructions-and-requirements.html
Then you never have to worry about manual updates anymore, they come
automatic with your operating system updates.
