Listmates,
Looking at the new file manager, I'm left scratching my head thinking -- is
this really it? Just a way to make files web accessible with no way to
categorize documents, link or associate documents with specific projects,
assign a type (fax, email, contract, letter, minutes, Ins. policy, etc…),
track chain of custody, or specify as an important document. Am I missing
something?
I recall the discussion of the new file manager and recall providing input.
See my post of 12/10/2007 12:03 PM. At that time we were looking at the ways
documents can be segregated and/or managed in a flexible manner so that finding
the needle-in-the-haystack is made simpler:
Fields I routinely use when databasing documents are:
doc_date
*filename
*doc_name
topic
*comment/description
*keywords
doc_type (fax, e-mail, letter, photo, etc…)
file_format (gif, jpeg, oo doc, word, etc…)
created_by
to
from
date_sent
date_received
received_by
delivery_method (certified, UPS, FedEx, etc…)
related_persons (Joe, Donna, Ralf, etc…)
related_files (links to Drawing 1, etc…)
project (egw project)
category (egw category)
assigned_to (egw user or group)
important (or hotdoc)
response_due (due_date or deadline to respond)
doc_location (server 1, storage area A, etc…)
is_digital (or is_scanned)
The current *expires and *sequence are fine as well

Did nothing like that make it into the new file manager? Looking forward, if I
add 1000 documents to file manager, how is the document list that we will be
left with much different than the output of ls -al? Just curious.
Also, are there any future plans on adding more fine-grained control over the
documents? I still believe that a good document handling component to egw is
something that would be invaluable and could really set egw apart. I’m no
programmer, so I might be reaching for the moon here, but it just doesn’t seem
that difficult to add additional fields document database that would really
really help businesses actually manage their files beyond simply making them
web available via an ACL list.
What do the rest of you think?
