Options for addressbook sync

Hi there,

I want to add some user-prefs for syncing the addressbook, cause we have a big addressbook in our company and this makes handhelds very slow.

As far as I can see, most of the backend is prepared for that, it’s just lacking the user interface.

The plan is as follows:
1st top level pref: sync all contacts the user has access to (like now, default)

2nd top level pref: just sync my “own” contacts
… with additional options:
– additionally sync contacts of these users: …
– additonally sync contacts of these categories: …
– additionally sync contacts of these addressbooks: …
(all options respecting ACLs of course, this handles the addressbook search function)

What do you think?
I’ll spend some time for implementing that, cause we really need it.

it’s a good idea

I think the prefs should be in the SyncML app, not in addressbook, as
they only have a meaning for SyncML.

A few years ago I created the necessary prefs and mailed them Lars for
testing …

Prefs for calendar (eg. the synced time frame, …) and InfoLog (which
types sync as todo, timeframe, own or responsible, …) would make a lot
sense.

yes, when I talked about the prefs, I meant the syncml prefs, not addressbook.
So, we’re in sync

I think I’ll start that after trunk gets prepared for the next 1.8?

Hi Christian,

I think if one is able to check the available addressbooks (there’s a
method to get them), it’s more straight forward then checking the ones
you dont want.

Maybe we should have 3 checkboxes:

• available addressbooks
• available categories
• available distribution lists
  Everything you check get synced: eg. all my personal contacts, the VIP
  customer category plus the distribution list of the last mailing.

I use the method and strip out “personal” and “private”.
… in this example you already check the ones you want to have.

Maybe we should have 3 checkboxes:

• available addressbooks
• available categories
• available distribution lists

I personally don’t like working with categories and distributon lists here, because my users have to maintain them (and they don’t do). I talked with a sync-user about that issue. Until a user recognizes that he has to add a contact to the list getting synced, it’s often too late and think of a user who has to sort about 3.000 contacts into his “sync” category, I think he will not do that.

So we came up with the idea to generally give the posibility to sync contacts created by “interesting” people, e.g. some people of my workgroup. Categories and Lists are from my point of view too static.

Everything you check get synced: eg. all my personal contacts, the VIP
customer category plus the distribution list of the last mailing.

So, you’re one of the people maintaining their categories
Maybe we go both ways and add additional categories + list sync for that kind of users.

Personal/private should always be synced, regardless of what the user says, because new created items on the handheld are always offered to the server.

The “add” or “sub” to/from chosen addressbook is difficult.
In our company we have one big addressbook, so “sub from addressbook” will be fine.
If every workgroup has small addressbooks, an “add to addressbook” will be fine
Maybe another setting? But it shouldn’t be too much and more intuitive, for that reason I don’t like the categories and lists in here…

Any other idea?
