As you know, since 2007 I have been passionately involved with building the Green Party in New York state, and working on campaigns in staff or volunteer roles. If I have been difficult to stay in touch with, over the years, it’s because building a politically independent party dedicated to the changes we need can be as overwhelming as it is necessary.
This year, however, my work - has a chance to pay off with a historic opportunity.
The New York Times has laid bare Governor Cuomo’s corrupt interference with the Moreland Commission (which he set up to investigate corruption!), and our candidate, Howie Hawkins, already has a credibility with the media and voters far surpassing when he ran for governor in 2010. That means we have a shot at winning 10%-15% of the vote, which would be a national story and huge shot across the bow of the corporate parties.
I’ve served as a Green Party of NY Co-chair, as a volunteer, for almost two years. My dream is to work as a full-time organizer for the party starting in 2015, and eventually serve as Executive Director - but those positions don’t even exist yet! 750,000 votes would establish us as a party with the support necessary to pay for staff and other resources, to sponsor candidate and activist trainings across the state, and to build a real movement.
The only way to reach enough New Yorkers to get 750,000 votes, in our current pay-to-play political system, is through buying ads on TV, radio and online. The only way to organize communities into activists and build our party is through hiring dedicated staff. That means we need to raise a lot of money in this campaign.
We know from campaign filings that we have about as many donors as Governor Cuomo, but our average donation is $75, while Cuomo’s is…well, a lot more! We need to raise a $250,000 to accomplish our goals, and it has to come from grassroots donors like you.
I’m asking you to support a candidate I believe in, a dream of a life working full time to build a movement that I love, and a political vision of putting the 99% back to work to build the clean energy infrastructure we desperately need to avert catastrophic climate change.
