Problems installing egroupware in docker image

Hello,

I wanted to produce a docker image to provide an easy installation of
egroupware, but I get a strange error:

While installation it says:

I searched the internet for this error and found some people having
problems with egroupware and debian jessie like
https://sourceforge.net/p/egroupware/mailman/message/34082415/ - but
this isn’t an upgrade, this was an empty installation - a new docker
container.

Or does someone have a working dockerfile for installing?

You can ignore these, they are from trying to detect an UCS installation.

dpkg: error processing package egroupware-epl (–configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit

EGroupware postinstall scripts writes a log to
/root/egroupware-epl-install.log, have a look for that.

Manual installation gives you exactly what you have now in your docker
file: EGrouware sources are there, but not database is installed. For
Docker that’s usually what you want.

What is your plan for dockerizing EGroupware? One container for
EGroupware sources, one for webserver and one for the database?

Btw. did your dockerfile contained a database, because EGroupware
postinstall will always fail, if there is no database available AND
credentials are either set in enviroment or it is root with empty
password (default for MySQL/MariaDB).

thanks for Your fast response.
Well, at the beginning I wasn’t sure, which way is the better one. Now
I’m taking the version “manual installation” - this way I can use 2
containers, one for the webserver including egroupware and the other one
for the database server. I don’t think it is neccessary and a good way
to use an extra container just for the application. When I’m finished,
I’m going to upload the image to the docker hub.
I’m using this way because I can’t get the automatic install via apt-get
update running. The database server (mariadb) is installed because of
its dependencies - but I think You’re right, because there is no
database created and just a root user without password the installation
fails…
But, anyway, thanks for Your help.

I’m still stuck with my problems regarding the dockerfile.
I’d like to create a dockerfile that can be used for creating an image
for general purposes that I want to upload to the docker hub.
After that I want to add a layer that includes my egroupware app (source
code under https://sourceforge.net/projects/rosin/ )
I have to admit, that I’m very new to docker, this kind of
virtualisation is for me so different from using VMs like Virtualbox etc
that I need some more food for thought.

I can’t solve the following problems because of my limited knowledge of
docker:

• Is there a possibility to handover a variable for the timezone while
  starting (not building) an image?
  I thought of something like adding an environmental variable to the file
  /usr/local/etc/php/conf.d/uploads.ini and setting this variable every
  time the container runs.

• Is this the right way to start the container so that it runs forever?

• How can I add ssl support?
  Considering the last question, I had the following idea: I wanted to
  create a special container that uses let’s encrypt to create encryption
  details and I want to distribute the encryption details to 2-3 other
  containers running on my home server. I know that the containers have
  the same server key and encryption, but this is OK for me.

I’m very thankful for any idea.
