Hi,
we’ve got a problem with one mailprovider (freenet) when mails are sent to a
user of this provider. This is the case when:
- many addresses are used in the “To:” - Field of the Header, e.g. you send
a mail to about 50 recipients
- AND the “From:” - Field (e.g.: My Name my.name@domain.com) is not quoted
(even if there’s no special character in it)
Those mails get rejected with a 550 (Syntax Error) from the mail server.
temporary Solution: if I quote the “From:” - Field (e.g. "My Name"
my.name@domain.com) everything is working well.
Failing example: Send me a mail on my freenet account: christian
binder <the.AT.sign> freakmail de. Put this address about 50
times into the “To:” Field of the mail.
Some time ago, I opened http://www.egroupware.org/bugs?tr_id=462 (I had
to search in my local mail since the site is not yet available), and I
think it’s somehow related. I’ll paste the last comment below:

Summary: 462 - Quoted recipients throw smtp error
I tested this in trunk, not sure if it happens in 1.2.
If there are recipients in the form '“John Smith” ’ in the textbox
(remove the single quotes), I get a smtp error. I spent some time until
I found that if I remove the double quotes (taking a look at how
addressbook entries are taken), then the mail is sent.
A secondary error is that every failed retry adds extra slashes around
the quoted text.

I can not reproduce that problem - with the newest version for
eGroupWare. You can get the newest version by updating via svn
(http://www.egroupware.org/wiki/subversion). Please
use the correct branch 1.2 for the stable release or trunk for
the develo

I didn’t try much harder with that, so I don’t know if it’s currently
hapenning or you’re experiencing a side effect of the same issue.
Anyway, you can test and confirm if this still happens and/or gives you
some idea about how to fix. In my case, when replying to the mail, the
way the addressed were formed had a bad syntax and I couldn’t send the
mail until I manually fixed every ocurrence.
Regards.
