Specifying eTemplates

1] When I create eTemaples, where are the specs (eg. the HTML with all the
labels and buttons) actually stored? I see no files in my directories that
hold this info.

eg. In the tutorial, you create 3 views: et_media.edit, et_media.show and
et_media.show.rows. Where can I find these to examine them manually?

2] As I modify my tables, I’m getting baseline, old and updated table files
created. I suspect the old ones can be disposed of, but do those update and
baseline files get called every time I run the app? I’d like to clean these
files up if possible so I’m back to simply a single current file. How would
I do this? (I see the app tracks version info).

As much as I know…

1] When I create eTemaples, where are the specs (eg. the HTML with

labels and buttons) actually stored? I see no files in my
directories that
hold this info.
The templates are stored in the database table egw_etemplate. They
are serialized, so you will have trouble examining them. When you
Dump4Setup in eTemplate editor they are dumped to app/setup/
etemplates.inc.php for distribution.

2] As I modify my tables, I’m getting baseline, old and updated
table files
created. I suspect the old ones can be disposed of, but do those
update and
baseline files get called every time I run the app?
I suspect you’re right about the *.old.inc.php files. app/setup/
tables_update.inc.php and app/setup/tables_baseline files are for
installing your application, and are automatically generated.
Baseline is the “original”, update is used to update previous
versions to the current version. I’ve messed with them in the past,
but I don’t think it’s worth it. As far as I know, they do not get
called every time you run the app, only when you install or upgrade
your application.

I’d like to clean these
files up if possible so I’m back to simply a single current file.
How would
I do this? (I see the app tracks version info).
I’d be interested in that too. It haven’t had time to figure it out
though. If someone else knows how to compress tables_update and
tables_current back into tables_baseline for a nice, neat
distribution, I’d be interested.

you can make a "dump for setup"
Than you’ll find a etemplates.inc.php in you setup dir.

OK, but where are they stored in the meantime?

Than you’ll find a etemplates.inc.php in you setup dir.

So, if I edit this file directly, it will make changes to my app?

You need the update script in order to update the tables properly from old
versions. If you don’t have other versions on other systems you don’t need
them.

OK, but I’m not talking about “old” old, I mean if I create a table, and
play with my app for five minutes, then decide to simply change a field in
the table, I will get these other files created. Unfortunately, that makes
it quite difficult to debug after that.

eg. I misspell a field name. When I edit the eTemplate to correct it, the
change to the table is not in the original tables_current file, it is in the
tables_update file. That’s a real pain to debug.

When you Dump4Setup in eTemplate editor they are dumped to
app/setup/etemplates.inc.php for distribution.

So I’ll ask you the same question: can I then alter this file and expect the
changes to be immeditately reflected in the app?

Or do changes have to come from the table egw_etemplate? If so, this forces
me to use the eGW interface (which I’m having a lot of difficulty with)
rather than fiddling with the coding directly.

yepp. etemplates looks for the mod-date of the file. if its newer as the last
"file-to-db" import, it makes a new import

thats how it is. but you can allways delete your app in setup and reinstall
it. this way only tables_current is affected.

How am I supposed to develop and debug my code if I can’t see what I’m
doing???

eg. (yes, I’m still working with the tutorial) I’ve added a date field to
the et_media tutorial.

I want to know why it’s not showing what’s in the database. Well, first
thing I need to do is look in the code to see what it’s actually doing. I
can’t do that if it’s hidden away.

As I understand it files in /setup are called when you install or upgrade
your app. So no they are not a good place to modify your tables / templates
/ code…

So you need to use the flies in /inc to modify the application data
management and the etemplate editor to modify the gui… and as you have
noticed there is a frustrating, steep learning curve.

Not sure if this will help or not but here goes:

in your php code add lots of
$debug = 1;
if ($debug){_debug_array($content);}

you should then see the data in the content array which is passed to and
from your etemplate by your ui code. The function _debug_array() will
output to your browser, neatly formatted.

Be sure to look at other etemplates e.g. if you see something similar in
the resources application then go to etemplates. Enter resources in the
Name filed and hit Read. you should see a list of available etemplates in
the Resources app, pick the relevant one and find how the relevant widget
was setup. Have a look in resources/class.ui… resources/class.bo…
resources/class.so to see how the data was managed for that app.

add some _debug_array() calls to those files to check that your data looks
similar to another egroupware app.

Have a look at the database content eg from phpmysqladmin or mysql
commandline; see how your app data compares with another app data. eg are
your dates formatted in a similar way the date widget in etemplates expects
an integer timestamp I think…

It is fairly quick and fairly powerful when you start to get a handle on
it… but painful till it comes together!

I can’t do that if it’s hidden away.

What gives you the idea that you can’t see it, or sth is “hidden away”?
Just use some client (e.g. phpmyadmin) to look into the table!
