today I talked with my collegue about the major deficits of eGroupware, or … how could we make eGW more comfortable for the users?
Since we are using eGW as Outlook/Exchange alternhative, from our point of view eGW should concentrate on two important things:
- Better sync support
most people using eGW and dispensing their desktop application (e.g. outlook) for that matter, do it for being “mobile”. That’s the great benefit of a web application. But being mobile often means not just having a browser everywhere. Data should be accessible with other devices too and not just over the webbrowser. A stable SyncML implementation (think of BlackBerrys for example) should be the standard here.
- E-Mail MAPI support
Every software company for 3rd party applications tell us: “Sending mails from our application is no problem”. And we tell them: it IS a problem, cause our mailer has no MAPI support. Almost all 3rd party applications use MAPI to send mails and not SMTP. Bad thing. Most users miss that feature. I know it’s not that simple to implement that, but it’ll make eGW more rich if we could do it.
