Syncing with Z-Push

Hi there,

just stumbled over the OpenSource Project Z-Push. This piece of PHP code allows handhelds to sync groupwares with the embedded ActiveSync Client from Microsoft.

The homepage of Z-Push promises developers to implement backends for their own groupware application within hours.

From my point of view, having a Server which supports native Active Sync from Microsoft, will be a very valuable thing. So, has anyone already experience with that and what’s your opinion about it?

Hello Christian!

I’m currently evaluating it.

Z-Push is a project which is still developing for PHP4 compatibility, which
is a little irritating for me as PHP4 is definitively dead. And they don’t
accept patches from the outside as they like to keep the copyright on the
code.

Beside that, they seem to have implemented real backends, which should make
it very easy to integrate their code with any other project. I’m currently
trying to get something working for Tine 2.0. I’ll keep you updated about by
findings. If it works for Tine 2.0 it should be possible to do the same for
eGroupWare.

I just reviewed it.

I discovered 2 problems.

First the code is really “PHP4”. It contains many functions which don’t
belong to any classes, which is a very bad sign for code quality. But as we
know, I have a different understanding of quality then others. From my point
of view, it is nice to see that it works, but I would prefer rewriting the
code base from scratch.

What makes it really unusable, is that they are distributing code licensed
under the GPL2 and PHP license. These two licenses are not compatible with
each other. Even if the file include/mimeDecode.php could be ripped out
easily, as it is only need for handling emails, it is still very dangerous.

I’ll try to get in contact with the developers.

good to get some response on it, thx for being one step ahead.

Besides all the problems with php4 and licensing it would be good to
check the stability and usefulness of the code. Maybe I find some time
for that.

Please give me an update if you hear something from the devels of Z-Push.

I tried to get in contact with the developers, but unfortunately I was
unable to register with their forum.

So I started to write my own ActiveSync server. And … I’m already done.
I’m really satisfied. After only 10 days I’m done with most of the core
problems. That was much more easier then working on the SyncML code.

Our ActiveSync server is completely PHP5 ready. Currently we can synchronize
Contacts, Tasks and Calendar. Push is working too. That’s a really nice
feature.

We still have to do some code cleanup and need to write some tests, then we
will be able to release the code with Tine 2.0. If we find some time, we can
also make a standalone version available.

I have tested the implementation with one Windows mobile device and a Nokia
E65. If i can convince Cornelius, we will also be able to test with his
IPhone.

That should be no problem for an experienced eGW developer.

The ActiveSync code has very less dependencies on Tine 2.0. If we release
the standalone version you will be able to use different backends. That way
you just need to write eGW backend.
