Ubuntu, eGw version?

I am using kubuntu 6.06 on a server I am setting up to run eGw. The
packages that are in the ubuntu repository are 1.0 something. I have
just tonight got eGw installed using the kubuntu packages so I don’t
have a bunch of data or configuration in it. Before I do that, I am
thinking I should update to the latest stable version. Since it
isn’t in the ubuntu repository, I am wondering, before I mess up my
nice new install whether running a newer version of this package has
gone smoothly for other ubuntu users? Am I better to follow the
upgrade instructions or do a fresh install with non-ubuntu packages?
Will this choice affect how easily the system is upgraded in the
future?

By the way, to the developers, I have to say that this looks like a
really dandy package, thanks for doing it.

I’m currently using latest egroupware (1.2.102) on Ubuntu Dapper 6.06
LTS!

I’ve tried 1.0 like you with Ubuntu packages for test and afterward
reformat and reinstall everything (even ubuntu in server mode)
correctly but with official packages (tar.bz2)…

If i was you… I would only try upgrading with egroupware official
packages… It’s a simple step if you follow the easy guidelines…

It’ll be great to know another contact that have the same setup as me!

Looking at the screen shots and reading the release notes, it does
seem like it would be worth starting out with 1.2. When I look at
the download packages on sourceforge, I see rpms and source packages.
Did you use the source files?

I have not often used source files because I have the notion that they
don’t update with apt-get and involve a lot of manual configuration.
Did you find that to be the case?

I had thought I would just wait for kubuntu to move up to the 1.2 in
their repositories and then apt-get update would do its magic for me,
but I am thinking I may not want to wait for that.

May I suggest you use SVN. I have found it to be very helpful, once it
was set up, because the latest version has bugs fixed, not
instabilities. Further, it is very easy to update. There is a
description of how to do it here:

Upgrading egroupware from original package (ex:
eGroupWare-1.2-102.tar.bz2) isn’t very difficult… In fact you know
more about the functionnality afterward which is very handy!!! NB:
use “sudo” for each command… just in case you do not
know!)

Just:
(1) copy the file next to the current egroupware installation (not in
egroupware directory!)

(2) backup your /egroupware/header.inc.php into another safe location
(like your home directory)

(3) backup your database (from egroupware’s admin tool) (you can also
copy the backup created in your backup directory somewhere else…)

(4) you can safely rename your current egroupware installation …just
in case (with: sudo mv egroupware egroupware.old)

(5) install the new version like: sudo tar -jxf
eGroupWare-1.2-102.tar.bz2
change ownership with: sudo chown www-data.www-data egroupware -R
change permission: sudo chmod a-w egroupware -R

(6) you can also do the same as step5 with the contrib package if you
want all available applications…

(7) Copy back your header.inc.php into the new /egroupware
installation

(8) Visit setup (http://domain/egroupware/setup) upper login and
update your database

(9) You can then restore your old database with the tools provided
with egroupware…

— OR you can use svn as said above (didn’t tried it for now…)

Hi,

setup create the DB backup automatic for a schema update, if you dont
switch it off
step 9, makes no sense to me: because after the restore, you need to run
the update again …

I hope our debian maintainer finds time to update the debian packages, after
Lars creates a new bugfix release (1.2.104) the next days.

As a debian (and now kubuntu) user, I am used to their apt-get update
process and would be happier just using that but waiting for the
debian package to get updated and then get into the kubuntu
repositories could take forever I am afraid . . . .

Feels like I’m speaking Chiniese to you

I said if you do NOT exclicitly turn the backup off, it will be done
automatic on every schema upgrade.

The other thing I said: if you restore the database, after running the
schema upgrade, you have to run it again, aka. there’s no point in restoring
the database after running a schema upgrade.

So far the debain packages only replace the the sources, but not saves you
from running the schema upgrade via setup. That might change in the future,
was we have now in the development version a command line interface to do
so.

One tip I meant to add: I used Konqueror to go through the set up
process and found it would not write the header file/config file.
Using Firefox it worked just fine. Using Konq, I would tell it to
write the file and it would take me back to the login and tell me my
header file needed to be fixed. Hope that is of use to others.
