felamimail part seems extremely slow. I am running egroupware 1.8 CE and have had
no issues with it, except when connecting to IMAP gmail it takes about 7 seconds to
display anything everytime I click on something.

I am afraid, felamimail is working fine, gmail imap is very slow.
Felamimail does not use caching system to hide the slowness of the imap email server (in this case, gmail).
The best is to use your local mail server (cyrus 
to fetch mails from gmail to your local account. I do this. Use gmail only as a buffer/backup storage and fetch your mails from it to get reasonable performance.
Anyway, keep you eye on your spam folder in gmail, as there are several false positive (if you use gmail for important messages like a business, I use for mailing lists usually or not important emails, so, I do not care, if some mails lost due to google spam filter).
