We have been moving toward using EGW as a full-on shared network
storage, so that folks can access documents from wherever they are,
using pretty much any device. EGW is great in terms of control and
access, but the webdav in EGW is slow, slow, slow when trying to access
or upload large files or large groups of files. This is a problem on
Linux, Mac and Windows.
We can access the host filesystem with smb and sftp, and transfers are
very fast.
They dont have to process it in an interpretive language.
Is there a tweak for webdav that will improve transfer speeds?
You could start with changing blocksize of php streams involved and of
cause usual php optimizations.
Or is there a method for getting the filemanager server to access the
underlying host filesystem, so that we can use other connection protocols?
We offer our EPL customers a special php extension allowing to access
smb shares with the credentials of the logged in EGroupware user.
Stock EGroupware has a filesystem stream wrapper, allowing to mount a
piece of the server filesystem, but without any user permission handling
(webserver need to run as root to set an arbitrary owner).
PHP in general can use ftps:

or sftp (ssh2.sftp) urls:
http://www.php.net/manual/en/wrappers.ssh2.php
The later looks, like it could be directly used in EGroupware as you can
specify user and password on the url. For theses two (and also our smb
stream wrapper) you need to have EGroupware users to be system users
with identical username and password!
I did search the Stylite pages before posting here, but maybe I used the
wrong terms.
