How do debug notifications not working?

Hello, sorry for repost (originally posted on /user/ group) - lack of notifications is really annoying…

I am currently on (1.8.004.20120423^W)1.8.004.20120515, installed from debs on Ubuntu Natty Server;

My users are all on Win XP SP3, and latest Firefox;

Problem is : everything /seems/ to be configured correctly, but Notifications on Infolog don’t work
(i.e. nothing pops up on Firefox as it used to do before) - I went through the list to find
the advice given to me beforehand re. notifications, and found all was (still) done as advised…
(that is, the /var/lib/php5 is in the open_basedir for egroupware on Apache2)

I have this problem since at least 1.8.004.20120405, which incidentally has this in changelog:

Notifications: fixed not correctly reset timezone after notifying users from other timezones

BUT also it seems to have coincided with Daylight Savings Time, on the last Sunday of March…

There are occurences of

[25/May/2012:11:53:26 +0100] “GET /egroupware/notifications/js/notificationajaxpopup.js?1335173381 HTTP/1.1” 304 245 “https://server_ip]/egroupware/etemplate/process_exec.php?menuaction=infolog.infolog_ui.index” “Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:12.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/12.0”

in /var/log/apache2/ssl_access.log - so the browsers do contact for notifications updates…

No errors related to notification(s) appear in error.log…

All users have timezone : Europe / Dublin in their preferences (mostly from Use Default)

How can I make the notifications be a tad more verbose on logging to find what’s the problem ?

Hmmm. After some trial/error/messing around, I set a breakpoint on xajax.responseReceived
(xajax_core.js:397) and watch tells me oRequest->commonHeaders->If-Modified-Since
contains “Sat, 1 Jan 2000 00:00:00 GMT”

Will try debugging more, a bit later…

Start with the request itself.
Use FB’s Net tab, filter XHR and watch for the get_notifications
request. Make sure it responds 200 OK, with something that looks like
a small javascript object (~100 bytes):

{“response”:[{“type”:“jquery”,“data”:{“select”:"#currentusers",“func”:“text”,“parms”:[“1”]}}]}

If it does, problem is client side. If it doesn’t, problem is server side.

Uhm, the problem is, this shows even thou I should be getting a notification

(e.g. somebody has edited a ticket in InfoLog that was mine:
all users have ‘Receive notifications about own items’ and
’Receive notifications about items assigned to you’ forced upon them in InfoLog
preferences; also Egroupware-popup backend is enabled;)

Hi,
I think if FIREBUG console view does not throw errors all should be fine with the calls and responses in common… In console view you can also view the data sent to the server and the data returned back to the browser. Maybe that things can give you a little hint for your problem.

On the Php side you could start inserting error log lines in notifications/inc/class.notifications.inc.php::send and see if this method gets triggered for new notification events.

Also have a look at the table egw_notifications and see if there’s notification data there at all.

Hope this helps. Maybe some names mentioned aren’t correct. I’m on holidays and do not have access to the code. Sorry for that in advance …

More debugging :

xajax_core.js has among line 339:
(beautified by hand for clarity)
var dNow=new Date();
rd.push(’&xjxr=’);
rd.push(dNow.getTime()); // when set a breakpoint there, dNow is correct timezone
//(GMT Daylight Time aka GMT+1)
delete dNow;

But upon looking into header of
POST xajax.php
the Date field of the request is ONE HOUR TOO EARLY (GMT instead of GMT+1)

Thoughts?

Hi,

please try to close all browser sessions for the user receiving the notification. Then fire up an event which normally sends a notification to this user (eg changing the infolog). if egw_notifications table exists and is still empty then, the error has to be on PHP side and has nothing to do with your browser or ajax.

MySQL returned an empty result set (i.e. zero rows). ( Query took 0.0005 sec )

when I look it up with phpmyadmin, when I edit an infolog entry that belongs to someone else;

I am trying to tap in to the infolog-edit window upon pressing ‘save’ but
it’s been tricky and my time was a bit undercut; will attempt again possibly tomorrow.

Hi,

1.8.004 does not seem to work. A quick debugging shows up that the
problem is that egroupware does not recognize the user as logged in. So,
no notification can be send.

I’ll dig into the problem later. I’ll post a fix as soon as possible.
